Gov. Jay Nixon is in Ferguson and surrounding areas today to work toward peace. He spoke today at Christ the King church in Florissant, telling faith leaders that peaceful protests must be allowed, that it’s a part of the healing process. He also said the press must be allowed to cover the event.

nixchurchThis announcement comes on the heels of several arrests last night, including that of two reporters.

“We have to have both safety, so that people can feel happy and good and about walking around their communities in all parts of our state, and this community that has been torn apart by this horrific and bad occurrence in the last week — but we also need to allow folks who want to express their energy in an appropriate way (applause) to have the absolute right to do that.”

Nixon spoke to President Obama earlier today, who shared his sentiment on ensuring people’s freedom of speech, assembly and press are upheld.

“I actually have a good excuse for being late today,” Nixon told those at the church. “It’s not an excuse I get to use very often, but I was on the phone with the President of the United States.”

He went on to say he would be meeting with authorities this afternoon to talk about a “shift in operations.”

“We are over the next few hours making some shifts so that folks will feel safe, as long as they honor what I said before, as long as they respect property and person of their neighbors — and frankly the vast majority of the people who have spoken have done just that — that voice needs to be heard.”
