Objections filed in Cook County judge ruling on worker pay

CHICAGO (AP) – The Illinois comptroller, unions and Gov. Bruce Rauner’s personnel agency are objecting to a Cook County circuit judge’s ruling that only certain workers will get paid until there’s a state budget.

Documents submitted Thursday to the First District Appellate Court in Chicago as part of an appeal say the lower court erred because “no workers will be timely paid for work already performed” and Illinois will face penalties.

Judge Diane Larsen ruled Tuesday after Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s request for legal review. Larsen said without a budget, Comptroller Leslie Munger may only pay some workers covered under federal minimum wage laws.

Comptroller attorneys say it’ll take months to determine which employees would be paid, meaning no workers will get a paycheck until Rauner and the Democrat-controlled Legislature approve a budget.
