Off Duty Officer Shot During Police Chase

(St. Louis) –KTRS.

Police chased a stolen car in downtown St. Louis last night and it turned into an exchange of gunfire near West Florissant Avenue and Riverview Boulevard. Interim Police Chief Lawrence O’Toole told reporters after the occupants of the vehicle began shooting the pursuing officers backed off but continued to follow the path of the vehicle.

Chief O’Toole said officers eventually used spike strips to stop the stolen car and the occupants again opened fire. Police returned fire striking one of the suspects in the ankle. An officer who lived in the area, but was off duty, came to the aid of his fellow officers and was shot in the shoulder.  Police say the off-duty officer’s injury is non-life threatening.

Chief O’Toole said they have two suspects in custody, both 17. The suspect who was shot in the ankle was taken to a hospital, also with a non-life threatening injury. They recovered two guns from the scene. One of the suspects who fled was caught without incident but a third suspect managed to get away and is still being sought.

The car police were chasing was stolen from Maryland Heights on the 15th of June according to Chief O’Toole.
