The Red Cross of Eastern Missouri and St. Louis Fire Department are teaming up to save lives.

Officials announced plans to provide and install smoke alarms to families who cannot afford them. Fire Chief Dennis Jenkerson said there was about a 15 percent increase in fire deaths last year, which includes almost 500 children.

“Of those children, 80 percent of those homes did not have working smoke detectors,” Jenkerson said. “With our partnership with the Red Cross, we are going to increase our push this year to get smoke detectors in everybody’s house.”

In addition to the smoke alarms, Red Cross CEO Cindy Erickson said they will help families make plans on how to get out of their homes in the event that there is a fire.

“On average you have up to two minutes—just two minutes to get out of your home if you have a fire,” Erickson said. “We also know that with a working smoke alarm, your chance of survival increases by 50 percent.”

Officials will install up to three alarms per household. To schedule a free smoke alarm installation, call 314-516-2797.
