Officials: University of Illinois mumps outbreak could grow

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) – Health officials say an outbreak of mumps among University of Illinois students could continue to grow.

The Champaign News-Gazette reports 23 cases of mumps, mostly among university students, have been identified.

Awais Vaid of the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District says most of the patients had been vaccinated, so the illness hasn’t been severe.

Mumps is a contagious viral illness spread through droplets of saliva or mucus. Symptoms include swelling, fever, headache, fatigue, muscle aches and tenderness in glands near the jaw and neck. Vaid says it’s important to stay home for five days at the first sign of swelling to help prevent the virus from spreading to others.

People with symptoms should contact a primary care doctor.
