EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) – The owner of a historic East St. Louis building that has fallen into disrepair has asked for a temporary restraining order seeking to halt its demolition by the city.

Kimberly Williams bought the 106-year-old Murphy Building 10 years ago for $700 at auction. However, she has been unable to complete a planned $7 million retail and residential project.

She filed the request Wednesday in St. Clair County Circuit Court to block demolition.

The city wants to use $440,000 in tax increment financing to tear down the crumbling landmark. It is ranked by historic preservationists as among Illinois’ most endangered.

East St. Louis officials call the property an eyesore and safety hazard and say they have tried to work unsuccessfully with Williams for years. A hearing is scheduled for later today.
