Police and demonstrators face-off near QuikTrip without incident

FERGUSON, MO (KTVI) – Tempers flared for a while outside St. Mark’s church after the community meeting on the shooting of Michael Brown held by Reverend Al Sharpton and community leaders ended.  The large crowd had gathered outside because the church had filled to capacity for the meeting. Those left outside held an impromptu rally before leaving the church.

Many from the crowd moved over to a demonstration being held at the burned out QuikTrip near the Canfield Green apartment complex on West Florissant.

For a time the situation was very tense as demonstrators and police with riot gear faced off in the street. At one point the crowd moved forward towards the police line. In response the police showed restraint by moving back and giving the protesters more space.

While the air was thick with the potential of repeat violence and tear gassing that occurred Monday night, both sides remained calm.

By 11:30 pm most of the protesters had started to leave area and police units started withdrawing from the area.
