Pothole season, repairs underway

ST. LOUIS (KTRS) – Roads crews are ditching their plows for shovels this week as work begins to repair potholes that have popped up on area roadways.

Potholes are caused by a combination of water and traffic. Water has a tendency to seep into cracks on almost any roadway, but when that water freezes it expands, causing the pavement to crack and bulge. Then when temperatures rise again, the water melts and creates unsupported voids underneath the surface of the road.

Enter traffic.. The average car weighs about 4000 pounds, that’s enough pressure to the cause chunks of the damaged pavement to pop out. The end result are potholes, which according to AAA costs American drivers over 6 billion dollars a year in car repairs.

MODOT is encouraging motorists to report potholes by calling 1-888-ASK-MoDOT  MoDOT or by filling out a form on their website.
