Public’s Help Sought in Latest Murders; Mayor Krewson Says Tax Hike Might Be Needed to Hire More Police

ST. LOUIS (KTRS) St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson says police need help from witnesses who may have information on Thursday’s shootings that left three people dead and a 7-year-old girl in critical condition. The shootout occurred at Beacon and Lillian Avenues in the 4900 block of Beacon Thursday. Two male victims and a woman died. The 7-year- old girl underwent surgery last night and is listed in critical but stable condition. The woman who died at the hospital is 24- year old Jessica Garth of Webster Groves. She is the mother of the 7 -year old. The woman’s boyfriend, 27-year old Derrick Irving, is one of the dead men. The name of the other victim has not been released. Police say they believe all victims were inside a vehicle when they were shot. A fifth person inside the car was not injured.

Mayor Krewson says part of the answer to the escalating violence is more police officers. Some city police are expected to leave for higher-paying jobs in St. Louis County. Mayor Krewson estimates it will take almost $20 million dollars to afford competitive salaries for city police. She says a sales or property tax increase may be the answer.
