(KTRS) — As the frigid temperatures continue to plummet, the threat of house fires increases.

During the first 12 days of February, the Red Cross of Eastern Missouri responded to 49 fires and assisted 206 people left homeless or in need of assistance.

Several of those fires proved deadly. With that in mind, the Red Cross is joining the St. Louis Fire Department in a mission to equip all homes and apartments with free smoke alarms.

Beginning Tuesday, families in the Greater St. Louis Area can call 314.516.2797 to schedule free smoke alarm installations.

Officials say that seven times a day, someone in the United States dies in a home fire and a working smoke alarm reduces the chance of death in a fire by 50 percent.
