Scott AFB planes may get runway help from airport

MASCOUTAH, Ill. (AP) – Scott Air Force base won’t have access to its runway for a few months because of maintenance work, but that doesn’t mean flights at the installation will be grounded.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports military aircraft flying in and out of Scott can access the runway at the adjacent MidAmerica St. Louis Airport.

MidAmerica is owned by St. Clair County. The county’s Public Building Commission oversees that airport and on Thursday authorized the military’s use of MidAmerica’s runway. The airport’s director says the Air Force hasn’t yet signed the agreement.

The Scott runway is expected to be closed through September to improve drainage near it.

The Air Force will pay $20,000 per month to use MidAmerica and provide emergency services.
