Senate returns to take up anti-heroin veto override

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) – The Illinois Senate returns to Springfield today to take up Gov. Bruce Rauner’s partial veto of a wide-ranging plan to fight heroin abuse.

The Republican governor used amendatory veto power to strip expanded Medicaid coverage for treatment drugs in the anti-heroin plan. The House overwhelmingly voted to reverse the changes last week. Similar action by the Senate would make the provision law.

Rauner struck from the bill a provision to expand Medicaid health coverage for the poor to include the popular treatment drug methadone and the overdose antidote called Narcan. Rauner pointed out that Medicaid already covers several types of heroin medication.

Both Republicans and Democrats favor the far-reaching heroin measure because of the epidemic use of the illegal drug in Illinois.
