Shirley Babashoff, winner of Olympic Gold, faced the brunt of the Russian doping scandal of the late 70s and 80s – hear her talk about her new book

Shirley Babashoff swam anchor on one of the most famous races in Olympic history. Her new book discusses her career in the pool, and defeating a most certainly doped up East German team.

Shirley Babashoff raced in the 1976 Olympic relays, which won the U.S.A. a gold medal, and more notably, defeated an East German team who were absolutely doped up on steroids. There’s a new documentary out about that swim, and her new book, Making Waves, is on shelves now, talking about her career, and that infamous race.

Shirley Babashoff speaks during a news conference at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials in Omaha, Neb., Friday, July 1, 2016. With the sporting world embroiled in another massive doping scandal, this one involving claims that Russia ran a state-sanctioned system for juicing its athletes, USA Swimming has stirred up a 40-year-old hornet's nest by producing a documentary film, "The Last Gold."
