ST. LOUIS (KTRS) – A local high school encouraged its students and faculty to leave their cars at home on Tuesday and instead find an alternative, more sustainable mode of transportation to and from school.

St. Louis University High School on Oakland Ave. has been celebrating what it calls “Car Free Day” for ten years. The students get a late start to the school day that gives them plenty of extra time for their commute.

“Not that many people change their habits,” said student organizer Parker Pence, “but if you can get one or two kids to maybe start taking the Metrolink instead of driving their car then that’s just one more car off the roads, and every little bit counts.”

The environmentally-conscious holiday is not mandatory and only 10-15% of SLUH’s more than 1000 students and faculty participated this year.

“The whole idea is to just raise awareness of the alternatives that are out there besides having 500 people driving in individually in their car,” said Bill Anderson, the school’s AP Environmental Science teacher.
