SLCC Meramec president resigns after flap over restroom attack
There's more fallout from an attack on a student inside a community college restroom.
St. Louis Community College Chancellor Myrtle Dorsey announced in a letter Monday that the president of the Meramec campus, where the attack occurred, has resigned. Meramec President George Wasson's resignation is effective immediately.
This follows sharp criticism about the college’s handling of the attack. The suspect, 18 year old Jevon Mallory, had been taken into custody, immediately after the incident, but was released by campus police with a warning.
He was re-arrested five days later and is currently in jail, facing felony assault charges.
Another issue of contention is the fact that no campus alerts had been issued after the attack.
Wildwood Campus President Pam McIntyre will take over as interim president of the Meramec campus during a search for Wasson’s replacement. Wildwood’s vice president will be interim president of that campus.
Campus police criticized for handling of attack in community college restroom
Officials with the St. Louis Community College at Meramec continue to be questioned about the way an alleged assault in a women's restroom was handled.
A student, 18 year old Jevon Mallory, was arrested Tuesday and charged with an April 18th attack on a female student. But critics are questioning the five day delay.
Campus police had taken Mallory into custody on the day Blythe Grupe reported being choked in a restroom. But no charges were filed, and no alert was sent to the campus community. Instead, police let Mallory go with a stern warning not to return to campus.
A college spokesperson told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that campus police hadn't initially view the attack as serious since there were no weapons involved.
After Grupe and her parents continued to push the issue, Mallory was arrested. He's now jailed in St. Louis County on felony assault charges.
Lincoln County man charged for punching, molesting toddler
A Lincoln County man has admitted to hitting a three year-old-girl girl while he was coming down from a heroin high, but denied allegations that he sexually assaulted her.

He has been charged with both assault and molestation and is held on a $200,000 bond.
Jefferson County woman convicted of beating son's heroin dealer
An Imperial, Missouri woman could spend a year in prison for beating her son's alleged heroin dealer with a baseball bat.
It took a Jefferson County jury about two hours Tuesday night to find 54 year old Sherrie Gavan guilty of third-degree misdemeanor assault.
Gavan admits that in December 2011, she hit Josh Loyd with a bat after seeking him out to tell him to stay away from her son, Clayton. Her attorney had argued "self-defense," saying Gavan had believed the teen was going to hit her with a brick.
Gavan says she just did what any parent would have done, especially a parent who knows what heroin does to their child. "It's like my husband said, there’s two ways out: you stop or you die," she said. "And I did not want to bury my son. I could not bury my son."
Gavin says even though she could go to prison, she'd do it again, because her son is alive, graduating high school with straight "A's" and getting ready for college.
