SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) - Prosecutors will no longer seek the death penalty against a southwest Missouri man who is charged with killing a classmate.

Prosecutors said Wednesday that they dropped the possibility of capital punishment after 20-year-old Gabriel Roche of Republic agreed to have his case decided by a judge, not a jury.

Roche is charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in the December 2011 death of 17-year-old Weston North. Roche took his classmate to a secluded area and stabbed him before slitting his throat.

Prosecutors say Roche believed North was a police informant.

The Springfield News-Leader reports Roche's attorneys didn't dispute that their client killed North. They asked the judge to consider charging him with second-degree murder, arguing that Roche was on drugs and hallucinating during the killing.

Charges against George Zimmerman were dropped

MIAMI (AP) - Prosecutors say they will not file domestic violence charges against George Zimmerman after his girlfriend said in a sworn statement she did not want to pursue the case.

State Attorney Phil Archer in Seminole County said in a statement Wednesday that Samantha Scheibe's decision not to cooperate and the lack of other corroborating evidence made a successful prosecution unlikely.

Zimmerman had faced charges of aggravated assault, battery and criminal mischief following a Nov. 18 incident at the central Florida house he shared with Scheibe. She initially told police Zimmerman pointed a shotgun at her face, then recanted in an affidavit filed this week.

Zimmerman was acquitted last summer in the shooting death of unarmed, black teenager Trayvon Martin. The case sparked a nationwide debate about race and self-defense laws.

Police say shortly after police confronted the man, he put down the 13-month-old child and shot himself. The child was unharmed.

Authorities say the officers checked the apartment building and found three deceased women in one unit. They apparently had been shot.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis police say a reported "knockout game" attack in the city has proven to be false.

The Post-Dispatch reports that investigators plan to seek criminal charges of falsifying a police report against the woman who made the report and her boyfriend.

The woman's claim that she was attacked randomly outside a St. Louis bar last month drew national attention. Police now believe she was injured by the boyfriend and they made up the story to cover for her injuries.

The so-called "knockout game" involves random attacks on innocent people. Some cases have been reported in St. Louis, including a fatal attack of a Vietnamese immigrant in 2011.
