CHICAGO (AP) - A federal judge has delayed a decision about granting Illinois Treasurer Dan Rutherford's request to throw out a lawsuit filed against him by a former employee.

An attorney for former employee Edmund Michalowski asked at a Thursday hearing for a month to respond to Rutherford's motion. Judge Joan Lefkow agreed. She didn't say when she would rule on Rutherford's request.

Michalowski accused Rutherford in January of sexual harassment and making him do political work while on state time.

Rutherford denies the claims and says they're politically motivated. The lawsuit came in the midst of Rutherford's failed bid for the Republican nomination for Illinois governor.

Rutherford's attorneys argue Michalowski doesn't show how he was harassed or discriminated against. And they argue Rutherford is entitled to government immunity.

CHICAGO (AP) - Treasurer Dan Rutherford was set to make a big splash in the Republican race for governor this week with his television ads scheduled to hit the airwaves. Instead, he's seeing headlines about allegations of misconduct made by an employee.

The Republican called a last-minute news conference last week to say unspecific claims by an employee in his office were untrue and connected to his rival Republican Bruce Rauner.

Political experts say the move was risky weeks from the March 18 primary.

For one, he opens himself up to more scrutiny. Democratic campaign strategist Pete Giangreco says there are more questions than answers.

However, Rutherford could use the attention to his advantage. Political analyst Thom Serafin says it raises Rutherford's exposure level and if handled correctly could benefit him.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Illinois' treasurer says he's monitoring the debt ceiling showdown in Washington and the impact it could have on the state's finances.

Members of Congress continued late Tuesday to search for deal that would allow raising the country's cap to borrow more money in order to pay its bills. The government has been partially shut down for more than two weeks as Democrats and Republicans haggle over spending.

Dan Rutherford's office says it utilizes U.S. Treasury securities as an important investment tool for the state's portfolios. The state holds $1.2 billion in U.S. Treasury bills that will mature over the next month.

Rutherford says planning ahead for a possible short-term default will allow the state to meet its payments on bonds and interest on a short-term basis.
