There won't be any relief for overcrowding at two metro-east jails after voters in two counties reject proposed tax increases to fund jail expansion.  A 0.25 percent sales tax increase to fund a $37 million expansion of the St. Clair County Jail was rejected by more than two-thirds of voters yesterday.  By a 2-1 margin, Madison County voters rejected a bond-finance plan to pay for nearly $19 million in renovations to bring their jail up to code.
Meanwhile, Fairview Heights residents overwhelmingly approved an 85 cent property tax increase in order to save the two elementary schools in the Grant School District.  School officials had warned they would have to dissolve the district without the increase, sending about 680 students to neighboring districts.

Man sought in father's death is found dead

The search for a man considered a person of interest in the death of his father is over.
The Major Case Squad has confirmed that the body found in a Fairview Heights motel was that of Jarad Daughtrey.
Police had been searching for Daughtrey to question him about his father, David Daughtrey's death.  The body of the elder Daughtrey was found in his Swansea home yesterday afternoon.
A cause of death has not been revealed and police say until it is, the father's death is considered suspicious, but has not yet been ruled a homicide.
Police say they found the father's van at the Trailway Motel in Fairview Heights early this morning and made contact by phone with Jarad Daughtrey. But after a period of time with no contact, they entered the room and discovered him dead.

Police: No bombs found at St. Clair Square

A metro-east mall will reopen Friday morning after a bomb scare closed it early Thursday afternoon.

Fairview Heights Police say a little before 4:00 p.m. they received a call from someone who said they had planted several explosive devices inside St. Clair Square.  Police notified mall officials and the building was quickly evacuated.

Fairview Heights police, U.S. Marshals, St. Clair County Sheriff's Deputies, Illinois State Police and bomb units from Scott Air Force Base spent about five hours searching the mall and all 144 shops using bomb sniffing dogs, but found nothing.  The all clear was sounded about 8:30 Thursday night.

Police have now shifted their focus to find the person who made the bomb threat.  Anyone with information is urged to call Fairview Heights Police.

Three teens held in connection to carjacking

Two 15-year-olds and 13-year-old are in custody connected to a carjacking Tuesday night.

The incident happened outside of a Dollar General store in Fairview Heights. A mother and her 7-year-old son say the suspects pulled a gun on them, demanded money, and sped off in her car. An officer in the area tried to stop the car, but the suspects did not stop. The driver lost control of the car and it slid off the road. After a brief manhunt, police captured the teens.

Police say all three teens had “airsoft guns,” which look like real guns. All three teens are being held in St. Clair County. One suspect was already on home confinement for a previous crime.
