Hannibal native's film draws rave reviews

HANNIBAL, Mo. (AP) — A northeast Missouri native's short film, a very personal account of childhood abuse, is drawing rave reviews.

Gretl Claggett now lives in New York but grew up in Hannibal, a Mississippi River town best known as the hometown of Mark Twain. The Hannibal Courier-Post reports that her film, "Happy Hour," was the winner for excellence in cinematography at the International Film Festival of Cinematic Arts in Los Angeles last month.

The 14-minute film, narrated by actress Julianne Moore, is based on Claggett's poem about the sexual abuse she suffered as a child from a family friend.

HANNIBAL, Mo. (AP) - Authorities in Hannibal, Mo., are trying to determine who is responsible for burning an American flag that sits atop Lover's Leap, a high bluff that overlooks the Mississippi River and downtown.

The Hannibal Courier-Post reports that a tourist visiting Lover's Leap on Tuesday found the charred remains of the flag.

Hannibal Parks and Recreation director Andy Dorian says he was "disgusted" by the vandalism. Police Chief Lyndell Davis says little evidence was left behind, but he remains hopeful leads can be developed.

Hannibal is the boyhood home of Mark Twain. The northeast Missouri town of 17,000 draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

HANNIBAL, Mo. (AP) — Officials in Hannibal now say foul play is not suspected in the death of a man found at a hotel.

The body of 63-year-old Howard Miller was discovered Wednesday morning at the Best Way Inn, just a few blocks from the Mark Twain historic sites in the northeast Missouri town.

The Hannibal Courier-Post reports that the cause of death remains a mystery after a preliminary autopsy. Marion County Coroner Darrell McCoy says it may be several weeks before the cause is known.
