It was a deadly holiday weekend on Missouri roadways.

The Missouri Highway Patrol says seven people died over Labor Day weekend, including two in St. Louis. Two deaths in the metro area were motorcyclists in town for the Ride of the Century, including Michael Evans. Evans was attempting to pass a car stopped at a light when he clipped the side-view mirror and ran into a pole.

Troopers investigated 248 crashes that resulted in the deaths and 112 injuries. A bright spot, the number of drunk-driving arrests was down from last year--119 this year, 147 in 2012.

A suspect is in custody following an hour-long chase that left police officer injured.

Authorities say the chase started about 4:00 p.m. Monday in Potosi after the suspect took off during a traffic stop.

The suspect stopped briefly for a DeSoto Police officer, but then rammed the police cruiser, causing it to strike the officer.

"The subject stopped outside Potosi, the officer exited his car and then the subject went in reverse.  He then hit the officers car." said Sgt. Kevin Miller of the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

It's not clear how serious the officer's injuries are.

The chase ended about 5:00 p.m. at Telegraph and Tenbrook in Arnold. The Missouri Highway Patrol says the man got out of the vehicle and surrendered.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Construction work on Illinois highways will be suspended for the Labor Day weekend to improve the flow of traffic and increase safety.

That's the word from the Illinois Department of Transportation, which announced its plans Tuesday. IDOT officials hope that by opening up as many traffic lanes as possible they will reduce congestion and make the holiday weekend more enjoyable for travelers.

Work will be put on hold starting at 3 p.m. Friday and will continue through midnight Monday.

The Department of Transportation reminds motorists that work zone speed limits remain in effect when they are posted, even if no workers are on site.

Missouri Transportation officials say they will apply another temporary surface to Poplar Street Bridge.

Deanna Venker, MoDOT's area engineer for the city told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Tuesday that the paving work is expected to take two weekends and will begin after Labor Day.

Even with the lane restrictions that come along with paving projects, the announcement should be good news for drivers, who've suffered all summer with pavement that's so bad, the metal surface of the bridge deck is exposed in several spots.  Venker says the exposed metal is a driving hazard because it becomes slippery in rain and snow.

Venker says the bridge surface is in such bad condition because crews have had trouble getting surface materials to stick to the metal box structure.  Officials hope the new pavement will last two to four years.

After the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge opens, they expect to make more permanent repairs as part of a bridge widening project.
