JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder has decided not to run for a southeast Missouri congressional seat next year.

Kinder announced his decision in a written statement Friday, about a month after he publicly said he was considering a congressional bid.

A campaign would have meant a primary challenge against Republican U.S. Representative Jason Smith, who won a special election for the 8th Congressional District in June.

Kinder noted in his statement that campaigns can be physically, mentally and emotionally exhausting. He said, quote: "An all-out run for Congress over the next year just isn't in the cards."

Kinder was elected last year to his third term as lieutenant governor. He said he plans to serve the remainder of the term, which runs until January 2017.

Lt. Governor Kinder eyeing Congressional run

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) - Missouri Republican Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder is moving toward a possible Congressional race.

The Southeast Missourian reported Tuesday that Kinder has formed a congressional exploratory committee for the 8th Congressional District. He says the committee's purpose is to forecast support for his potential candidacy. Kinder is serving his third term as lieutenant governor

Republican Jason Smith, of Salem, currently represents the 8th Congressional District. Smith beat out Kinder and several others earlier this year for the Republican nomination to replace U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson after she resigned. Smith was picked by an 84-person committee of local Republican leaders.

Missouri's 8th Congressional District appears on the 2014 ballot.

IL Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon won't seek re-election

SPRINGFIELD, IL (AP) - Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon says she won't seek re-election next year but is weighing her options when it comes to seeking another public office.

She declined to give details, but she spent much of a news conference yesterday playing up her legal and financial experience.

Political experts say the move points toward exploring a run for attorney general or another statewide office and would allow for Simon to raise campaign funds separately from Gov. Pat Quinn, who's seen his approval rating dip.

It would also allow Simon to see who else is running.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan said yesterday that she hasn't decided yet on a 2014 gubernatorial run.

Simon told Quinn her decision in December. She said that in a few months she'll make another announcement about her future plans.
