A total of six deaths on Missouri roads and waterways this holiday weekend.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says five people died in the more than 270 accidents from Friday night through Monday. There were also 129 arrests for drunken driving.

On the waterways, one man died at Upper Big Lake, just east of Sikeston. Troopers say 64-year-old Oscar Shannon fell overboard and drowned while tying his boat to a tree--he was not wearing a life jacket.

The six deaths represent a decrease from the nine fatalities investigated on roadways over the holiday weekend in 2012.

Enterprise Holdings is increasing their hiring of veterans as we head into Memorial Day Weekend.

The company says they have already hired more than 600 vets this year and plan to increase that number to 2,000 by the end of the year. Enterprise is part of the nation-wide 100,000 Jobs Mission--a campaign to hire 100,000 veterans by 2020.

Enterprise is named after an aircraft carrier, the USS Enterprise. Company founder Jack Taylor served as a Navy Pilot aboard the carrier.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Illinois transportation officials say they're gearing up for busy roadways this Memorial Day weekend and have a plan to reduce congestion.

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced Thursday that non-emergency roadwork will be suspended to improve traffic flow at the unofficial start of summer.

Transportation Secretary Ann Schneider says the move helps ensure safety with the increase of motorists expected on the roads.

The suspension starts 3 p.m. on Friday through midnight Monday.

Transportation officials are urging motorists to obey posted speed limits and that posted limits are still in effect for construction zones even if there's no construction in the works.
