St. Louis police chief wants drones

ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson wants to add drones to his crime-fighting arsenal.

The Post-Dispatch reports that Dotson wrote a letter this spring to the Federal Aviation Administration making the case for unmanned aerial vehicles. He says that it's crucial to look at new technologies to keep officers and the public safe and to apprehend criminals.

The letter was a preliminary step toward seeking approval for unmanned — and unarmed — flight.

The assent of Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce is required, and she also wrote to the FAA to offer "enthusiastic support."

Dotson says he would seek donations and grants to pay for the drones. They cost from $60,000 to $300,000 each. While pricey, they're still cheaper and safer than helicopters.

Privacy advocates have raised concerns.

BELLEVILLE, Ill. -- AP —Police in Belleville say they’re investigating reports that female students at a Catholic high school secretly were videotaped by one of the school’s sports teams.

Police Chief William Clay Jr. isn’t discussing publicly details of the case involving the several Althoff Catholic High School females who may have been videotaped.

He says the investigation involves a possible violation of state law barring unauthorized video recording in a restroom or locker room.

Clay says the school’s staff did their own investigation of the matter before notifying police May 3.

St. Clair County State’s Attorney Brendan Kelly says a special prosecutor has been assigned to the case at his request because of a conflict in his office.

For a second day, heavy rainfall has delayed the start of a project at the Bridgeton Landfill.

But when work begins to get rid of an odor coming from the landfill--homeowners who live nearby are staying in nearby hotels. They're concerned their homes could be broken into while they're away.

Missouri Attorney General and Bridgeton police chief Don Hood promise residents both marked and unmarked cars will be patrolling those neighborhoods affected by the temporary move.
