Lambert Airport sees decline in passengers

Lambert-St. Louis International Airport recorded a dip in passenger activity for 2013.  The decrease was about one percent overall, or a drop off of about 112-thousand passengers.

The airport did serve over 12.5 million passengers last year. Lambert reported a positive finish to 2013 with an increase in passenger travel of nearly 2.5 percent in December.

That was a rebound after November saw the biggest monthly drop in passenger travel for the year.  For 2013, Southwest Airlines remained the top carrier with a nearly 49 percent market share.

American is Lambert’s second biggest carrier with about a 15-percent share of the market.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal investigators say Southwest Airlines pilots who recently landed at the wrong airport in Missouri have told them they were confused by the small airport's runway lights.

The National Transportation Safety Board said Friday the pilots of the Boeing 737 with 124 passengers on board told investigators they saw the bright runway lights of Graham Clark Downtown Airport, located in Hollister and mistakenly identified it as the larger Branson Airport, which is seven miles away.

NTSB said the pilots contacted the Branson control tower and were told they were 15 miles from their target. But the pilots responded they had the runway in sight. They were cleared to land.

The Downtown Airport runway is half as long as the Branson runway. The runways are oriented in a similar direction.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt of Missouri is demanding answers about why a Southwest Airlines jet landed at the wrong airport.

Southwest Flight 4013 was traveling from Chicago's Midway Airport to Branson Airport Sunday evening. It landed instead about seven miles away at Taney County Airport, with a runway about half the size of Branson's.

No one was hurt but a passenger told The Associated Press the landing was abrupt.

Blunt, a Republican from southwest Missouri, sent a letter Tuesday to Federal Aviation Administration administrator Michael Huerta urging a complete and thorough investigation.

The National Transportation safety Board is also investigating the incident. The NTSB says it will analyze the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder. NTSB investigators plan to interview crew this week.

Travelers will be able to fly Southwest Airlines out of Branson starting tomorrow.

Southwest plans to offer one daily flight each to Chicago, Dallas and Houston.

Airport officials say Southwest will add a second daily flight to Chicago starting in June.
