WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama has signed a major disaster declaration for 18 Missouri counties hit hard by last month's floods.

The floods that resulted from nearly two weeks of heavy rain caused widespread damage across the southern tier of the state and left at least three people dead.

The White House said in a news release that federal funding is available to help local governments and nonprofits recover. The counties that will benefit are Barry, Camden, Cedar, Dade, Dallas, Laclede, Maries, McDonald, Miller, Osage, Ozark, Phelps, Pulaski, Shannon, Taney, Texas, Webster and Wright.

Federal funding is also available for hazard mitigation measures statewide.

CONWAY, Mo. (AP) - Gov. Jay Nixon is asking the federal government to issue a major disaster declaration for 22 southern Missouri counties hit hard by this month's floods.

Nixon said Tuesday the costs of emergency response and repairs will be high.

The floods that resulted from nearly two weeks of heavy rain caused widespread damage across the southern tier and left at least three people dead.

Nixon announced his request in Conway, where the waste water treatment system was heavily damaged.

The governor is asking the federal government to clear the way for individual and public assistance in 14 counties, public assistance in four counties and individual assistance in four others.

Individual assistance allows households to seek federal aid for uninsured losses. Public assistance allows local governments to seek help with response and recovery expenses.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP) — President Barack Obama has declared a major disaster declaration after severe storms struck Missouri from May 29th to June 10th.

The storms included one that spawned a tornado in the St. Louis area and others that caused widespread flooding.

The declaration allows the federal government to provide government entities and some nonprofits help paying for emergency work and facility replacement and repairs in 27 counties. They span from Barton County on the border with Kansas to St. Louis County. Funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide.

Obama will travel Wednesday to Galesburg, Illinois and Warrensburg, Missouri to make his case for spending on infrastructure and for universal pre-school programs. Obama is also expected to highlight the economic benefits of overhauling immigration laws.

12 Mo. counties eligible for assistance

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Farmers in a dozen Missouri counties could be eligible for emergency loans through the U.S. Agriculture Department for damage from severe spring weather.

Gov. Jay Nixon's office said Tuesday the federal agency has declared natural disasters for the counties because of severe storms, high winds and flooding.

The northern counties of Clark, Harrison, Mercer, Putnam, Schuyler, Scotland and Worth are eligible because they border primary disaster areas in Iowa hit by severe weather in the second half of April.

In eastern Missouri, five counties are eligible because they border primary disaster areas in Illinois that were affected by severe weather between April 16 and May 5. Those counties are Lincoln, Marion, Pike, Ralls and St. Charles.

Farmers should document losses or additional costs caused by the weather between those dates.
