Residents might notice a stronger stench from the Bridgeton Landfill while crews complete a repair.

A fire broke out at the landfill on Sunday because of a broken pipe. The fire sent smoke billowing into the air and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources had to be called in to test air quality.

Crews are now at work replacing a sump pump. Landfill officials say a stronger odor could be present until work is complete.

People who live near a Bridgeton landfill get to return home today. Some had been staying in hotels as excavation work was done at the landfill which had been emitting a noxious odor.

Work is still still being done at the landfill. So far, six concrete pipes have been removed which contributed to the terrible smell.

Republic Services is now installing a landfill cap to control the odor.

BRIDGETON, Mo. (AP) - The operators of a landfill in St. Louis County have completed a well improvement project seeking to remove odor-causing gas that has raised concerns for those who live near the facility.

Bridgeton Landfill LLC said Wednesday that it has installed 40 new wells about a week ahead of schedule. Gas will be removed through the wells, then transported to an on-site processing facility.

The landfill sits near Lambert Airport. Residents who work and live near it have complained for months about the smell and raised health concerns.

Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster late last month filed a lawsuit against the landfill operators, alleging violations of state environmental laws on the 52-acre site.
