ST. LOUIS (AP) - Men who prowl the streets of St. Louis for prostitutes can expect a brightly colored postcard in the mail - from police.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that in an effort to curb prostitution, police are targeting, and perhaps humiliating, the "johns" who use the services. The postcards mailed to the homes of those charged with trying to pick up prostitutes will offer a reminder about spreading sexually transmitted diseases, along with listing the court date.

In addition, police say they plan to routinely provide local news media with mug shots of those charged with prostitution crimes to dissuade them from trying it again.

Solicitation is an ordinance violation carrying a penalty often no harsher than a fine. Police hope the postcards are an attention-grabber that deters johns. They are rolling out the program this week in two neighborhoods where residents have complained of prostitution.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - A St. Louis County man has been sentenced to nearly five years in prison for transporting five female victims for prostitution purposes between Missouri and five other states.
Federal prosecutors say 45 year old Barry Wimberly of Hazelwood pleaded guilty in December to one felony count of transportation for purposes of prostitution. He was sentenced Wednesday.
Court documents show that Wimberly operated a prostitution business, transporting women for sex between Missouri and Illinois, North Dakota, Minnesota, Georgia and Florida.

Zumba madam declines to testify at trial

ALFRED, Maine (AP) - A judge says a Maine woman convicted of running a prostitution business out of a Zumba studio doesn't have to answer prosecutors' questions in the trial of a man accused of patronizing her.

Justice Roland Cole ruled Thursday after Alexis Wright's attorney argued that testimony could open her up to prosecution on new charges.

Prosecutors wanted Wright to testify in next week's trial of former Kennebunk High School hockey coach Donald Hill. Wright declined under oath to answer questions about him.

Wright is serving a 10-month sentence for prostitution and other charges. Hill is the first alleged client to go to trial.

So far, 68 people have been charged with paying for sex. At least 58 others have pleaded guilty.
