St. Louis, MO (KTRS) - Residents in St. Louis city lodged a record number of complaints about snow removal.

Officials say they received more than 1,300 complaints in 2013--more than the total from the previous five years combined. On January 10th, two days after nearly a foot of snow fell on the area, 41 complaints were made in one hour.

That’s more than all complaints combined in 2012. This winter the city plowed side streets for the first time.

Snow plow crews in the City of St. Louis are changing their strategy for clearing the roads during this storm.
One of the chief complaints with the last big winter storm was that plows clearing main thoroughfares had created snow mounds that blocked the streets leading into residential areas.
Not this time.  City Streets Director Todd Waelterman tells Fox 2 News that after the plows pass by, a second crew will hit the area.  "We'll go in with a two-man crew and we'll actually scoop those out and push that snow to the side to try to eliminate the extra snow we've created there," he said.
As to whether the side streets themselves will be plowed, Waelterman says he's still reviewing his department's overall policies for handling residential streets.

Temperatures may be in the 70's and 80's but that isn't stopping MoDOT from preparing for wintry weather.

MoDOT is hiring for emergency snow removal crews. They are looking for on-call operators that will help 2,400 full-time employees to maintain over 33,000 miles of roadways. The on-call employees will be trained to supplement MoDOT's snow removal operations.

Pay for the positions average around $14 an hour. More information on the job requirements and where to apply can be found at modot.org or by calling 888-ASK-MODOT.

A light dusting of snow has transportation officials monitoring road temperatures and condtions overnight.

St. Louis County and St. Louis City street crews pre-treated the roads Thursday evening in an effort to prevent any morning rush hour surprises. But both MoDOT and IDOT officials decided to wait and monitor. Both transportation departments say they'll adjust as conditions warrant.

At midnight, road temperature sensors were showing the interstates all above freezing. But drivers are being cautioned to use extra care on elevated roadways, ramps and bridges.
