Tab for St. Louis-area transfers: $23 million

Friday, 26 July 2013 08:24 Published in Local News

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Two troubled St. Louis-area school district could pay a combined $23 million to cover tuition and transportation costs for students opting to attend accredited districts.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/11iSOkf ) reports that nearly 1,700 students in the Normandy and Riverview Gardens districts have applied to transfer. That follows a recent Missouri Supreme Court ruling requiring unaccredited districts to pick up those costs for students who want to attend better schools.

The home districts must cover the tuition costs, and must pay for transportation to at least one school district.

The potential financial cost is a huge challenge for the two districts that are already facing budget problems.

About 16 percent of students in both districts have expressed interest in transferring.

Reports allege history of violence at Mullenix mansion

Wednesday, 24 July 2013 08:12 Published in Local News

New details show a possible history of violence between 76-year-old Ivan Mullenix and his 69-year-old wife Mary Ann, who is now charged with stabbing her former husband to death last week in their west St. Louis County mansion. According to police reports, Mary Ann alleged her husband choked her and threw her to the ground during a fight last summer. In the same report, Ivan Mullenix claimed his wife had struck him in the face with an 8-pound dumbbell. Neither side decided to press charges. In the report obtained by the Post-Dispatch, police noted that Mary Ann was acting irrationally that night, and they included a "caution code" about her use of alcohol. Mary Ann is currently free of $50,000 bail. She's been required to wear an alcohol monitoring bracelet.
