Don't be alarmed by the overwhelming stench of death coming from the Missouri Botanical Gardens. It's just the corpse flower in bloom. The rare plant known as titum arum is expected to bloom within the next few weeks. Only 160 of the tall, stinky flowers have bloomed worldwide, including two at the Botanical Gardens last year. Experts say the corpse flower is extremely hard to cultivate and will only bloom under the right conditions. If you're interested in taking a whiff, daytime viewing of the flower is included with admission to the gardens.

SSM Health Care cutting jobs

Wednesday, 09 October 2013 07:35 Published in Local News

ST. LOUIS (AP) - A St. Louis-based nonprofit hospital system is cutting jobs. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/19zhw51 ) reports that SSM Health Care is making the announcement this week to employees. Spokeswoman Kristen Johnson says that out of respect for affected workers, details won't be made public until later this week. Some health care organizations, including BJC HealthCare in St. Louis, have cut staffs in part due to reduced government reimbursements from Medicare and Medicaid services. Johnson declined to say why SSM's layoffs were necessary. SSM has 18 hospitals, two nursing homes and more than 150 outpatient sites and operates in Missouri, Illinois, Oklahoma and Wisconsin.

Habitat for Humanity dedicating 5 houses

Tuesday, 08 October 2013 09:11 Published in Local News

Habitat for Humanity will be dedicating five new homes in the historic Cardondelet neighborhood this morning. The projects were almost never completed after thieves stole more than $18,000 dollars worth of power tools from two of the construction sites last spring. In late April, thieves broke into a trailer parked in front of a home on Virginia Avenue and stole $13,000 worth of tools. Then in early May, thieves walked away with tools and a generator from a home on Michigan Avenue. A local Home Depot store replaced all of the stolen items after Habitat appealed to the public for help. Habitat for Humanity has built over 300 homes in the St. Louis area.
