Adult, 2 kids dead after accident on I-55

Friday, 25 October 2013 12:28 Published in Local News

An early morning accident leaves a woman and two children dead.

Around 5:30 Friday morning, a cargo van crashed into a Chevy Impala on Interstate 55 near Litchfield, Illinois. Investigators say it appears the Chevy was either stopped or moving very slowly when the accident occurred. A woman sitting in the front seat of the car was killed and two kids in the back seat of the car died as well. Two other children were taken to Cardinal Glennon Hospital in St. Louis.

The driver of the van was not injured.

A Belleville martial arts instructor is headed to prison after admitting to sexually abusing three of his students.

Christopher Horton told a judge, he abused the students and recorded the acts on his cell phone. The incidents happened between May of 2012 and February of this year. The victims were between six and ten years old. Horton pleaded guilty to six total counts. When he is sentenced in March, Horton will face up to 30 years behind bars.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - A prominent Kansas City defense attorney has been hired to represent a northwest Missouri man at the center of a teen sexual assault case that has gained worldwide attention because of the way it was handled.

J.R. Hobbs confirmed Thursday that he will assist the Maryville native who was 17 in January 2012 when a 14-year-old girl claimed he plied her with alcohol and sexually assaulted her.

Daisy Coleman says justice was not served when Nodaway County prosecutor Robert Rice dismissed felony charges against the boy and a second 17-year-old accused of recording the incident on his cellphone.

Jackson County prosecuting attorney Jean Peters Baker was appointed Monday as special prosecutor in the case and will decide whether evidence supports refiling of charges.
