New school year awaits kids who survived twister

Thursday, 15 August 2013 15:09 Published in National News

MOORE, Okla. (AP) - Nearly three months after a twister blasted through Moore, Okla., and destroyed two elementary schools, students are going back to class.

And although many families are ready to return to a familiar routine, parents and teachers say many children in the Oklahoma City suburb have fears that are still fresh and a lot more healing to do.

One young girl is so afraid of the wind that she carries headphones to block out the noise. Other kids are traumatized by memories of their narrow escape and friends who died just a few feet away from them.

Classes resume Friday in temporary buildings until Plaza Towers Elementary and Briarwood Elementary are rebuilt. The May 20 tornado killed 24 people and wrecked scores of homes and businesses.

Lesbian teacher at Ohio school won't get job back

Thursday, 15 August 2013 15:06 Published in National News

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - A lesbian teacher challenging her firing by a Roman Catholic school in Ohio will not get her job back as part of a settlement reached with the Diocese of Columbus.

The attorneys for Carla Hale and the diocese on Thursday announced that as part of the agreement, she will receive "acknowledgement" for her years of service at Bishop Watterson High School. Both parties declined to give details of the settlement.

Hale is a physical education teacher. She had argued she was fired after her mother's obituary included the name of Hale's partner and someone complained.

Bishop Frederick Campbell had said Hale was fired not because of sexual orientation but because she violated the church's moral teaching by having what he described as a "quasi-spousal relationship" with a woman.

Zumba madam declines to testify at trial

Thursday, 15 August 2013 15:04 Published in National News

ALFRED, Maine (AP) - A judge says a Maine woman convicted of running a prostitution business out of a Zumba studio doesn't have to answer prosecutors' questions in the trial of a man accused of patronizing her.

Justice Roland Cole ruled Thursday after Alexis Wright's attorney argued that testimony could open her up to prosecution on new charges.

Prosecutors wanted Wright to testify in next week's trial of former Kennebunk High School hockey coach Donald Hill. Wright declined under oath to answer questions about him.

Wright is serving a 10-month sentence for prostitution and other charges. Hill is the first alleged client to go to trial.

So far, 68 people have been charged with paying for sex. At least 58 others have pleaded guilty.
