WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP) — President Barack Obama has declared a major disaster declaration after severe storms struck Missouri from May 29th to June 10th.

The storms included one that spawned a tornado in the St. Louis area and others that caused widespread flooding.

The declaration allows the federal government to provide government entities and some nonprofits help paying for emergency work and facility replacement and repairs in 27 counties. They span from Barton County on the border with Kansas to St. Louis County. Funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide.

Obama will travel Wednesday to Galesburg, Illinois and Warrensburg, Missouri to make his case for spending on infrastructure and for universal pre-school programs. Obama is also expected to highlight the economic benefits of overhauling immigration laws.

One suspect is being investigated in connection to a possible sexual assault at an off-campus St. Louis University apartment.

Police received reports that a 21-year-old man was boasting about having sex with a teen at an off campus apartment. The girl in question told investigators she could not remember the encounter.

The incident occurred in the 300 block of South Grand Avenue.

East St. Louis man charged for attacking officers

Friday, 19 July 2013 15:16 Published in Local News

East St. Louis Police are holding a man for allegedly attacking two officers at a crime scene.

Police say Darryl Robinson drove his car into a crime scene area on July 5. When officers with the East St. Louis Police Department and Illinois State Police tried to remove Robinson from his vehicle, they say he tried to drive off and hit two officers. The officers suffered only minor injuries, but Robinson was able to drive away. He was arrested earlier this week.

He now faces three charges connected to the incident.
