SIU-Carbondale further restricts smoking on campus

Monday, 24 February 2014 13:51 Published in Local News
CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) - Smokers at Southern Illinois University will only be able to light up in a handful of places on the Carbondale campus starting this summer.

Carbondale Chancellor Rita Cheng says that as of July 1 the campus will be effectively smoke-free. Only designated areas in campus parking lots are exceptions.

Cheng told the Southern Illinoisan that smoking already is banned within 15 feet of building entrances. The ban includes smoking in dormitories.

Cheng hopes the campus someday will be entirely smoke free.

Some smokers on campus aren't happy, though. Senior Jon Poynter says he understands people around a smoker may not like the smoke. But he believes the ban denies him his right to smoke.

Americans for Nonsmokers' Rights says more than 1,100 college campuses nationwide are smoke free.

Judge denies stay requests for death row inmate

Monday, 24 February 2014 13:14 Published in Local News
ST. LOUIS (AP) - Attorneys for Missouri death row inmate Michael Taylor continue the effort to spare his life, even as a federal judge has turned down some of his requests for a stay of execution.

U.S. District Judge Beth Phillips on Monday refused to halt the execution based on separate claims that Missouri's one-drug execution method could cause a painful death, and that the state in three recent executions put inmates to death while court cases were still pending. Taylor's attorney, John Simon, appealed to a federal appeals court.

Phillips is still considering another stay request, a claim that Taylor had an ineffective attorney at his original trial.

Taylor faces execution at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday for abducting, raping and killing a 15-year-old Kansas City girl in 1989.
