St. Louis named top travel destination

Tuesday, 08 April 2014 12:42 Published in Local News

St. Louis, MO (KTRS) - St. Louis' reputation as a tourist destination is growing.

Travel website TripAdvisor named St. Louis one of the 25 top destinations in the US. The Gateway City took the 23rd spot. Branson, Missouri also made the cut, in the 19th spot. New York City snagged the top position for the fourth consecutive year.

This is just the latest recognition for St. Louis. The Huffington Post named St. Louis a hidden gem last month. And TripAdvisor named Busch Stadium one of the best ballparks in the nation.

School funding overhaul advances in Ill. Senate

Tuesday, 08 April 2014 12:12 Published in Local News
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Legislation that would dramatically change the way schools are funded in Illinois for the first time since 1997 is advancing in the Illinois Legislature.

The legislation is sponsored by Democratic Sen. Andy Manar of Bunker Hill. It would streamline the state's school funding formula by requiring districts to demonstrate need before receiving money.

The current method factors in a district's poverty for some types of state aid but not others.

Manar says the bill creates equity between districts that have rich property tax bases and poorer districts.

But Republican critics say they want more details before signing on to the proposal.

A subcommittee in the state Senate passed the measure on Tuesday. The legislation faces another vote by a Senate committee before it heads to the full chamber.

AG Koster closes Clayton auction house

Monday, 07 April 2014 16:20 Published in Local News
ST. LOUIS (AP) - Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster says his office has obtained a temporary restraining order prohibiting a suburban St. Louis action house from doing business, citing complaints from dozens of customers about missed payments for auctioned items.

Koster announced the action Monday against Ivey-Selkirk Auctioneers & Appraisers, based in Clayton, Mo. The Attorney General's Office obtained a temporary restraining order prohibiting the company from doing business. Koster says a civil petition filed Thursday accuses the auction house of unfair business practices and making false promises.

Messages left Monday with the company were not immediately returned.

Koster says that about 40 customers have complained to his office over the past several months, saying they were not paid for items the company auctioned on their behalf.
