Echoes of Zimmerman expected in Florida trial

Sunday, 02 February 2014 10:14 Published in National News

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — A white software developer is about to go on trial in Florida in the death of a black teenager — in a case that raises comparisons to the George Zimmerman-Trayvon Martin case.

Jury selection is scheduled to begin Monday in the trial of 47-year-old Michael Dunn.

Police say Dunn fatally shot 17-year-old Jordan Davis in 2012 outside a Jacksonville convenience store after arguing over loud music that Davis and his friends were playing from their SUV.

Dunn says he fired multiple shots into the SUV after the teens threatened him and one raised a shotgun. Dunn was arrested the next day.

Zimmerman, a Hispanic, was acquitted of second-degree murder last year in the death of Martin, a 17-year-old black teen.

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — The Connecticut prosecutor who investigated Woody Allen on child molestation claims more than 20 years ago but didn't file charges says it's too late for the film director to be prosecuted.

Former Litchfield County state attorney Frank Maco said in a phone interview Sunday with The Associated Press that the statute of limitations on adopted daughter Dylan Farrow's accusations ran out at least 15 years ago.

Maco had said in 1993 that he lacked evidence to prosecute Allen but suspected the abuse did occur. He retired in 2003.

Farrow renewed allegations against Allen in an open letter to The New York Times on Saturday, saying he sexually assaulted her when she was 7 after he and actress Mia Farrow adopted her.

Allen has denied the accusations.

No. 11 Kentucky downs Mizzou

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Aaron Harrison scored 21 points and James Young added 20 to help Number 11 Kentucky beat Missouri 84-79 on Saturday.

The Wildcats (16-5, 6-2 Southeastern Conference) kept their poise one game after calling a player-only meeting to discuss the team's issues away from home.

Jabari Brown finished with a career-high 33 points and Jordan Clarkson scored 28 to keep Missouri (16-5, 4-4) in the game. Clarkson's layup with 51.9 seconds remaining narrowed the Tigers' deficit to 80-77, but Aaron Harrison answered with a layup 30 seconds later to end the threat.

Missouri's frontcourt offense only mustered three points in Columbia. The team fell to 43-3 at home under third-year coach Frank Haith, but has lost two of its last four.
