St. Louis woman accused of stabbing her brother

Tuesday, 24 December 2013 13:59 Published in Local News
ST. LOUIS (AP) - A St. Louis woman is facing charges for stabbing her brother, critically injuring him.

Charges of first-degree domestic assault, evidence tampering and armed criminal action were filed Sunday against 53-year-old Angela Hallmon. She is jailed on $50,000 cash bond.

Police say Hallmon called authorities on Saturday to say she had stabbed her brother following an argument. She was arrested, and her brother was taken to a hospital in critical and unstable condition. The motive for the attack was not disclosed.

A Jefferson City boy and the St. Louis man charged with kidnapping him are both dead after an apparent murder-suicide.  The bodies of six year old Markell Beasley and 40 year old Demetrius Beasley were found shot to death Tuesday night at a home in Cape Girardeau. Police are still investigating, but say it appears the man shot the child and then turned the gun on himself.

Police say Demetrius Beasley wasn't the boy's biological father, but had had a relationship with the child's mother.  She told police she had allowed her son to travel to St. Louis from Jefferson City on Saturday for a Christmas gathering with Demetrius Beasley's family. But the mother said she later learned there was no gathering and that Beasley didn't intend to return her son.

Police had charged the St. Louis man with kidnapping Tuesday morning.

Missouri has been awarded a $7.5 million federal grant to continue a program that helps the state's lowest-achieving schools.

The U.S. Department of Education announced the award from the federal School Improvement Grants program on Monday. In all, the agency awarded more than $43 million in such grants to seven states.

Missouri's education department will distribute the federal funds to districts showing the greatest need and strongest commitment to improving achievement at their lowest-performing schools.

This is the third year Missouri has received a grant from the federal program
