Navy seeks more sexual assault survey responses

Saturday, 21 December 2013 08:13 Published in National News

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Participation is lagging in an anonymous survey geared to learning how big of a problem sexual assault is in the Navy and Marines.

The Navy said earlier this month that it had only received about half as many responses as it did to its last survey, conducted in 2011. The current online survey opened on Oct. 15 and closes Jan. 6.

Getting sailors to voluntarily fill out the surveys is important to determine how wide a discrepancy there is between the number of sexual assaults that occur and those that are officially reported.

The Navy says that in the 2012 fiscal year, more than 10,000 sailors reported that they were victims of unwanted sexual assault. But only 700 formal complaints were filed.

Woman gets shock time in dog-dragging case

Saturday, 21 December 2013 08:10 Published in Local News

ST. CHARLES, Mo. (AP) — A suburban St. Louis woman will spend two days in jail for accidentally dragging her pit bull down Interstate 70.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that 34-year-old Amy Taylor of Bridgeton was sentenced to the shock time in jail on Friday and ordered to pay veterinary bills for the 2-year-old dog, Coco. She pleaded guilty Monday to one count of misdemeanor animal abuse.

The dog was dragged for about a mile on May 22nd in St. Charles County. Authorities say Taylor put the dog in an unsecured kennel in the back of her pickup and failed to remove his leash. Somehow the dog got out of the kennel but the leash hung up on the tailgate.

Coco was badly hurt but survived.

Man sentenced for killing uncle over pork steak argument

Saturday, 21 December 2013 08:09 Published in Local News

ST. LOUIS (AP) — A St. Louis County man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for killing his uncle during an argument over pork steaks.

John Cunningham was sentenced Friday in St. Louis Circuit Court, where he was convicted earlier of voluntary manslaughter and armed criminal action.

Police said the Jennings resident shot Lessie Lowe in September 2012 at the older man's home in St. Louis.

The shooting followed a dispute over whether the cuts of meat they were planning to cook were pork steaks or pork chops. Cunningham said they were pork steaks, but Lowe disagreed.

Police said they were pork steaks.
