St. Louis County Police say they have arrested a suspect connected to the theft of a Salvation Army Red Kettle.

The bucket was stolen from a Fenton grocery store on December 12. The suspect used bolt cutters to cut the padlock off the bucket while the bell-ringer volunteer was on break. Police also say that the suspect confessed to stealing a second Salvation Army bucket from Crystal City.

East St. Louis police on the site of an accident near the offices of School District 189.

Officers were called to the scene on reports of gunfire. When they arrived, there was a two car accident. One person was taken to the hospital, but it is not known if the injuries were from gunshots or the car accident.

This is a developing story.

Proton radiation now available in St. Louis

Friday, 20 December 2013 11:34 Published in Health & Fitness
ST. LOUIS (AP) - Proton radiation, designed to get rid of cancerous cells but spare healthy tissue, is now available for the first time in St. Louis.

The first use of proton radiation occurred Thursday at Barnes-Jewish Hospital during treatment of Steven Osborne, who has a brain tumor.

The proton machine cost $20 million and was delivered to the hospital in 2011. Software glitches held up use of the machine. Larger proton systems have previously opened at 11 other locations around the country.

Not everyone is a supporter. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that some criticize the massive and expensive machines as a symbol of rising health care costs, and note that there is no evidence that patient outcomes are better.
