Madison County to pay half-million in lawsuit

Friday, 20 December 2013 09:18 Published in Local News

Madison County, Illinois will pay almost 500-thousand dollars to settle a gender-discrimination lawsuit brought by a former employee.

The Madison County Board has voted to resolve the case involving former Regional Office of Education youth advocate Mary Parker. Parker claimed she was paid less than her male counterpart - 13-thousand dollars less in one particular year.  She also says she was retaliated against when she complained.

A jury in November 2012 awarded Parker 100-thousand dollars in damages after agreeing with the retaliation claim.

Trooper the dog headed to forever home for Christman

Friday, 20 December 2013 09:15 Published in Local News

Just in time for Christmas, a dog that was severely injured after being dragged for nearly a mile down I-55 last November is getting a forever home.

Trooper the dog will go home Friday with his new owner.  The St. Louis man who adopted the energetic pit-bull is an experience dog owner who recently lost his own pit-bull after years of companionship.  Humane Society of Missouri president Kathy Warnick says narrowing down the list of applicants wasn't easy.

Trooper's new "dad" works from home, so he'll be able to spend lots of time with the dog as he continues to recover from his injuries.

New traffic laws to for Illinois in the New Year

Friday, 20 December 2013 09:13 Published in Local News

Several new traffic laws take effect in Illinois January 1st.

The speed limit on rural interstates will go up from 65 to 70-miles-per-hour.  Madison and St. Clair Counties can opt out on heavily congested highways.  Penalties for speeding will get tougher.  Driving more than 26 miles-per-hour over the speed limit will be a Class B misdemeanor.  Exceed the limit by 35 miles-per-hour and is a Class A misdemeanor.

And the use of hand-held cellphones will be banned.  Fines run from 70-to-150-dollars.  Cause a fatal accident because of cellphone use and you could spend three years in prison.  Bluetooth headsets, earpieces, and voice activated commands are still allowed.
