Affton man dead after confrontation with police

Monday, 15 July 2013 00:49 Published in Local News

The St. Louis County coroner is trying to determine if police shot an Affton man to death, or if he shot himself.

St. Louis County Police were called to a home in the 9800 block of Arv-Ellen about 7:30 Saturday night because of a man reportedly waving a gun around in his front yard and yelling for someone to call police.

Officers arrived to find 36 year old Shawn Spiros sitting on the front porch.

Police say they tried to talk with Spiros, but he pulled a gun from his waistband, raised it toward officers and then at his own head.  Police spokesman Randy Vaughn says it appears that Spiros and an officer fired at the same time. It's yet not clear which shot killed Spiros.  The coroner is expected to release a report on Monday.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst lost control of the Texas Senate to what he called an "unruly mob" during an abortion debate two weeks ago. He says it won't happen again.

The conservative Republican has scheduled a vote on Friday afternoon to impose new restrictions on when, where and how women may obtain an abortion in Texas.

Angry protesters prevented the bill from passing in the final 15 minutes of the first special legislative session by shouting and screaming. When protesters return Friday afternoon, Dewhurst has dozens of additional state police on standby. He says he will clear the Senate if spectators start protesting.

Democrats say they can do little to stop Friday's vote and the bill will go to Gov. Rick Perry. Abortion-rights groups expect to challenge it in court.

A woman who disappeared while kayaking on the Mississippi Rive near Portage des Sioux Thursday night is safe.

The Missouri Highway Patrol reports that the woman had launched into the river near the My River Home marina in northern St. Charles County around 7 p.m..  She had been gone more than two hours when friends and family became concerned and called for help.

Rescue boats were launched around 10 p.m.

A Missouri Water Patrol team found the woman about 11 p.m.  She was shouting for help from an island after being dumped into the river when her kayak flipped.
