Mystery illness sends 3 Hazelwood children to hospital

Friday, 24 January 2014 03:42 Published in Local News

Doctors are still trying to determine what caused three young children to become sick inside their Hazelwood home.

Authorities say the children's babysitter called 9-1-1 Thursday afternoon when she had trouble waking the children, ages two, three and four.  Firefighters pulled the children from the home on Tamma Lane and rushed them to DePaul Hospital.

Just what made them sick is still a mystery.  Firefighters checked the home for carbon monoxide leaks, but found none.  Initial toxicology tests also gave no clues.

The children were later airlifted to Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital for more extensive testing. Hazelwood police say they're being told the children are expected to recover.

Injunction a blow to Mo. health care law

Friday, 24 January 2014 03:37 Published in Local News
ST. LOUIS (AP) - A federal judge on Thursday granted a preliminary injunction against Missouri's law requiring a state license to serve as a navigator to help consumers sign up for coverage through the new health insurance marketplace.
An attorney for the St. Louis-based plaintiffs calls the ruling by U.S. District Judge Ortrie Smith a "huge victory."
A new state law requires insurance counselors to receive at least 30 hours of training and pay a small fee in order to help online shoppers negotiate the federal insurance exchange. Missouri's Republican-led Legislature opted against setting up a state-run exchange.
The lawsuit filed in November said the requirements conflict with the federal Affordable Care Act.

Boeing Super Hornet line gets a bone from Congress

Thursday, 23 January 2014 02:54 Published in Local News

Boeing employees in St. Louis should know later this year if they're going to keep building F-18 Super Hornet fighter jets for the U.S. Navy after 2016.

The Navy had planned to switch over to the new F-35 Joint Strike Fighters built by Lockheed-Martin.  But the F-35 project has been plagued with delays, cost overruns and other problems.  So the omnibus spending bill signed into law last week (Jan. 17) contains a down payment of $75 million for 22 of Boeing's F-18s, even though the Navy didn't ask for them.

The law requires Navy officials to take another look at adding to the existing F-18 fleet as a hedge against more problems with the F-35.
