Bomb at funeral kills 16 north of Iraq's capital

Wednesday, 15 January 2014 04:12 Published in National News
BAGHDAD (AP) - Authorities say a bomb blast at a funeral north of Iraq's capital has killed at least 16 people, the deadliest of a series of attacks that have killed at least 37.
The funeral attack happened Wednesday in the town of Buhriz, about 60 kilometers (35 miles) north of Baghdad. Police say 16 people were killed in that blast inside a mourning tent, while at least 26 were wounded.
Two medical officials confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release information.
Iraq remains gripped by violence as al-Qaida-linked militants took control of two cities in Anbar province, west of Baghdad. A series of bombings in the capital Wednesday killed at least 21 people.

Gunn defends handling of Edward Mueth scandal

Wednesday, 15 January 2014 04:02 Published in Local News
St. Louis County Health Department Director Delores Gunn says there was no orchestrated effort to delay reporting the Edward Mueth scandal to police.
Mueth killed himself September 19th, about a month after his bosses at the Health Department discovered that he'd been overcharging the department for services and equipment through a computer company he owned.  Police say Mueth embezzled millions from the county.
Gunn's statement comes a day after the St. Louis Post-Dispatch published comments from Police Chief Tim Fitch and County Prosecutor Bob McCulloch that were critical of the Health Department's handling of the scandal. Fitch and McCulloch say Health officials had uncovered Mueth's scam about a month before his suicide, but didn't tell them until after his death.
Last night, St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley expressed his support for Gunn. Dooley told reporters, "I have the complete confidence with Dr. Gunn's ability, what she has accomplished as our Health director, no question about it."
Meanwhile, Dooley opponent, Councilman Steve Stenger called on Chief Operating Officer Garry Earls to step down over the scandal. Earls says he's not planning to resign.

4th annual "No Pants" Metrolink ride turns heads

Wednesday, 15 January 2014 03:55 Published in Local News
The 4th Annual "No Pants" Metrolink Ride is being called a success.
St. Louis' Improve Anywhere held its fourth annual event last night.  Participants ditched their pants and hopped on the Metrolink near Forest Park.  They rode downtown to an after party at Pi Pizza.
Organizers say the event is aimed at creating a buzz, celebrating public transit, and serving as a reminder that we all need to laugh.
"No Pants" subway day began in New York 12 years ago.  Similar events are now held in hundreds of cities and 26 countries.
