Mann and Shenandoah Schools to stay open

Friday, 20 December 2013 08:31 Published in Local News

Two south St. Louis schools will be renovated instead of being closed.

St. Louis Public Schools Superintendent Kelvin Adams recommended to the school board Thursday night that Shenandoah and Mann Elementary Schools remain open.

A 2009 study had suggested that both be closed and a single new school be built to replace them.  Adams says improvements in enrollment, academics and community support since then influenced his decision.

The proposed renovations would cost about $1.4 million.

Operation Block Leave underway at Lambert Airport

Friday, 20 December 2013 08:27 Published in Local News
Today is one of the busiest days of the year at Lambert St. Louis International Airport.  Operation Block Leave, will send thousands of troops from Fort Leonard Wood through the airport today as they head home for the holidays.  And they'll pass through the James S. McDonnell USO along the way.
This year, as in every year, the USO and area businesses have teamed up to throw them a big party.
Former Marine and Iran Embassy hostage, Rocky Sickmann was there, representing one of the sponsor, Anheuser-Busch.
Sickmann told Fox 2 News that the sacrifices our military personnel make for the sake of our freedom shouldn't be forgotten, especially at the holidays. "This USO here, is a small way for us to say thank you, as they go back home to enjoy their holiday season," Sickmann said.
The soldiers arrived at the airport to find food, music and other comforts as they wait for their planes home.

Dotson calls for FBI probe of officer-involved shooting

Thursday, 19 December 2013 03:21 Published in Local News

St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson is doing something he's never done before.  He's calling for an FBI investigation of an officer-involved shooting.

In April 2013, 25 year old Cary Ball was shot to death by police after he fled a traffic stop.  The officers say Ball had pointed his gun at them.  A police investigation concluded last month that the shooting was justified.

Ball's family told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that they don't believe he would have aimed a gun at police.  They've filed a wrongful-death suit.

Chief Dotson told the paper that he's asked for the FBI probe to make certain his department got it right, and not because of any allegations against the officers involved.
