Infrastructure charge approved for Ameren Missouri

Friday, 04 October 2013 03:59 Published in Local News

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Missouri regulators have approved an infrastructure surcharge for natural gas customers of Ameren Missouri.

The Public Service Commission says the surcharge will cost residential customers 75 cents per month.

Ameren Missouri sought the surcharge for infrastructure improvements it has made since the start of 2011. Its costs for replacing and relocating natural gas pipelines are not included in its rates.

St. Louis-based Ameren Missouri has about nearly 127,000 natural gas customers in Missouri.

Rare Rhinoceros Hornbill at St. Louis Zoo

Friday, 04 October 2013 03:36 Published in Around Town

ST. LOUIS (AP) - St. Louis Zoo officials are celebrating a first - the birth of a baby Rhinoceros Hornbill.

The yellow-beaked bird actually hatched July 13 but has remained in its nest. The species is near the threatened list and is native to Indonesia, Asia and Thailand. The birth was a first for the breed at the zoo in Forest Park.

The birds eventually reach about 3 feet tall and weigh up to 7 pounds. The chick has not yet come out of its hollow but visitors can see it sticking its beak out for food.

CHICAGO (AP) - A television pitchman accused of pushing false information during his late-night infomercials could avoid jail because of the government shutdown.

The Federal Trade Commission sued Kevin Trudeau, alleging he made misleading statements about his weight-loss books. Trudeau says he's unable to pay a $37 million judgment, and the FTC wants him jailed until he proves his financial assets.

But because of the government shutdown, FTC lawyers aren't getting paid. They were expected to ask a judge during a Friday hearing in Chicago to jail Trudeau, but they requested that the hearing be indefinitely delayed.

The judge briefly jailed Trudeau last month and warned he could do it again.

Trudeau's attorney didn't return a message Thursday. A voicemail for FTC lawyers said they couldn't respond until "the government ... resumes operation."
