Cards beat Pirates in 5 hr, 14 inning game; move to within 2

Wednesday, 14 August 2013 02:19 Published in Sports

Backup outfielder Adron Chambers singled home the winning run in the 14th inning as the Cardinals outlasted the Pittsburgh Pirates and cut into their NL Central lead with a 4-3 victory on Tuesday night.

Sam Freeman (1-0) allowed a walk in a scoreless 14th for the Cardinals, who saddled the Pirates with their fourth straight loss and pulled within two games of them with a win in the 4-hour, 55-minute game.

Pittsburgh had four hits the first time through the order against Adam Wainwright and led 3-0 after two innings on homers by Andrew McCutchen and Jordy Mercer. They had six hits the rest of the way.

Both teams had chances in extra innings before the Cardinals, who had dropped four of five, cashed in.

Jon Jay singled off Jared Hughes (2-3) with one out in the 14th with his fourth hit. Jay stole second and then raced home and beat left fielder Starling Marte's throw.

ST. JOSEPH, La. (AP) - Louisiana State Police superintendent Col. Mike Edmonson says one of the hostages shot during a hostage standoff at a rural bank has died.

The suspect had initially taken three hostages Tuesday afternoon in St. Joseph but later released one of them.

The gunman - identified as 20-year-old Fuaed (FOO-od) Abdo Ahmed - later told negotiators he would kill the remaining two hostages. Edmonson says state police entered the building just before midnight Tuesday and that's when the suspect shot the hostages before being shot and killed by police.

Edmonson said he didn't have any other information about the hostage who died. The condition of the other hostage who was shot is unknown.

The Riverview Gardens School District will pay $3,675 each day to bus about 1,400 transfer students to Mehlville and Kirkwood.  That was the winning bid among six companies vying for the contract.

The half-million dollar contract with First Student Transportation was approved Tuesday.  The unaccredited district will also pay about $12,000 in annual tuition for each transfer student.

District officials say their finances are stable for this school year, but there could be trouble if the transfers continue next year.
