Good Samaritans save woman from beating

Friday, 07 February 2014 10:48 Published in Local News
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Police are praising three Good Samaritans who stopped a domestic assault along a busy Kansas City highway.
Police and court documents say a man was beating his wife near an exit from Interstate 70 at U.S. 40 when the three people stopped. They say the helpful motorists possibly saved the woman's life.
The Kansas City Star reports the 31-year-old victim suffered a broken nose, broken facial bones, cuts and bruises in the beating Jan. 30.
She told police her husband threatened to kill her and then himself. The man jumped in his car and escaped when the other drivers stopped but he was later arrested.
The suspect, 38-year-old Robert Tyus, was charged Wednesday with first-degree assault and felonious restraint. Court records do not indicate if he has an attorney.

Officials look to raise funds for Ronald Reagan statute

Friday, 07 February 2014 10:43 Published in Local News
DIXON, Ill. (AP) - Western Illinois officials will try to raise $200,000 to build a bronzed statue of a young Ronald Reagan near the beach where he once worked as a lifeguard.
The Dixon Telegraph reports the statue would be 7 feet fall and be installed in Lowell Park, where Reagan spent summers working as a lifeguard.
The Illinois native who went on to become the nation's 40th president was credited with saving 77 people from the Rock River.
The statue would be created by Highland Park sculptor Gary Tillery. It will show the nation's 40th president running toward the river to rescue a swimmer.
Dixon Mayor Jim Burke says fundraising for the project is expected to start in March and he hopes to raise the money by June.

WASHINGTON (AP) — US employers add 113,000 jobs, a modest gain; jobless rate falls to 5-year low of 6.6 pct.
