St. Louis businessman Brunner to announce bid for governor

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) – Suburban St. Louis businessman John Brunner is set to formally announce a Republican bid for Missouri governor.

The former CEO of the hand-sanitizer company Vi-Jon Inc. has said he’ll make his candidacy official Monday. Brunner, 63 of the St. Louis suburb of Frontenac, is touting his experience as a business leader. He has criticized what he calls career politicians.

Brunner has never served in public office. He ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Senate in 2012 but lost a Republican primary to former U.S. Rep. Todd Akin.

Brunner joins four other GOP candidates running to replace Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon, who’s barred from seeking re-election because of term limits. Democratic Attorney General Chris Koster is the only expected Democratic candidate.
