(KTRS) – St. Louis city officials spent time this week discussing the need for police to start using body cameras.

A three-person committee on the Board of Alderman took up the issue Thursday. While the group adjourned without making any recommendation, they did note that the use of body cameras would help to add transparency. The estimated cost for the cameras could range as high as $2 million. Expenses not included in that figure include money for camera maintenance and cost of server space to store footage.

The Post-Dispatch reports that at least 14 members of the board of Aldermen signed a letter saying the oppose the use of ward funds to purchase the cameras–they say there should be an alternative source of funds. Any proposal to use cameras must be approved by the city’s police union.
