St. Louis County Executive Reacts To Officer Shootings In Ferguson

St. Louis, MO (KTRS)  St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger says he is continuing to have conversations with Ferguson Mayor James Knowles about the possibility of St. Louis County police taking over.

“I have had multiple discussions with Mayor Knowles over I’d say a two-week period and certainly that subject has been talked about and I have offered him all of our assistance that we have.  We have certainly stood ready and have performed when asked to step in and help out and will continue to do that.”

Stenger made that statement during a Thursday morning news conference, where he was joined by St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar and Captain Michael Nelson of the Webster Groves Police Department.

Belmar used the word ambush to describe what happened when the officers were shot near the Ferguson Police Department early Thursday morning. The two officers were standing side by side in a police line with about twenty to twenty-five other officers when shots were fired.

The officers haven’t been identified.  Belmar did say that the St. Louis County Police officer is 41-year-old and a 14 year veteran of law enforcement.  He suffered a gunshot wound to his shoulder.

The Webster Groves police officer is 32-years-old and a 5 year veteran of law enforcement. He was shot in the face.

Both officers were released from the hospital on Thursday morning.
