CLAYTON, Mo. (AP) – St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger is pushing for legislation to establish minimum standards for officers in the 57 municipal police departments in the county.

Stenger on Wednesday announced the initiative to bring all municipalities into compliance with minimum state law enforcement standards on training, use of force, pursuits and other areas.

The co-chairmen of the Ferguson Commission lauded the plan, which addresses some of the concerns raised during unrest that followed the fatal shooting of Michael Brown by Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson last year. Wilson was not charged, but the protests led to scrutiny about how officers in some departments reacted.

Stenger says the goal is consistent, high-quality policing across the county. The county council must still give its approval.
